• Develop and strengthen bilateral political, economic, cultural, educational, scientific and other sectoral cooperation between the European Union and Japan.
• Where relevant, cooperation with Japan also enables the EU to better promote and advance its interests and values at a global and regional level.

Political, Press and Information Section

The section is responsible for both following and fostering bilateral work in the areas of foreign, security, and development policy, judicial cooperation, social affairs and human rights as well as promoting the strategic communication of the EU on all dimensions of EU-Japan relations. It also works to bring the EU and its diversity closer to our Japanese friends through such initiatives as the European Higher Education Fair, the EU Film Days and the European Literature Festival.

Science, Innovation, Digital, and Other EU Policies Section

This section promotes EU science, innovation, and digital policies and cooperation with Japan, working with the government, funding agencies, research organisations and industry in Japan. The section provides strategic input on international cooperation on science, innovation, and digital policy matters to Brussels headquarters, and holds regular policy events in Japan.

Trade Section

The section follows all trade and commerce developments in Japan. It works closely with the Japanese Government as well as with Japanese and European business organisations and covers sectors from aviation, telecommunication, energy and manufacturing to agriculture and environment. In particular, it has supported the negotiations for an Economic Partnership Agreement between the EU and Japan. Now after the conclusion of the negotiations, one of the main tasks of the section is to prepare for implementation of the Agreement, in cooperation with EU Member States and businesses.

Administration Section

The section supports the daily functioning of the Delegation and its staff, including maintenance of buildings and residences. It liaises with appropriate authorities in the EU and Japan on all protocol and administrative matters related to EU officials.

EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation

The EU-Japan Centre is a unique venture between the European Commission and METI aimed at improving EU and Japanese companies' competitiveness and cooperation by facilitating exchanges of experience and know-how between EU and Japanese businesses. It is based in Tokyo and has an office in Brussels.

Export conditions

Concerning the export conditions of Japanese products to the EU, the EU Delegation is not in a position to respond to such inquiries. Japanese exporters should instead address their questions to JETRO, to the Japanese ministries or the Japanese mission in Brussels.

Alternatively, in case the exporters wish to get in direct contact with the EU authorities, this can be done through the Commission's Access2Markets.

Visa Information

The Delegation does not issue visas. Visas are issued by the Embassies of the Member States.
