Travel & Study
Useful information on travelling from Malawi to the European Union (EU), such as visas, travel restrictions and embassies, and for studying there.
Visas
New EU rules on short-stay visas apply worldwide from 2 February 2020. They make it easier for legitimate travellers to apply for a visa to come to Europe, facilitating tourism, trade and business, while providing more resources for countering irregular migration risks and threats to internal security.

Ever heard of the new EU Entry/Exit System (EES)?
The EES is the EU’s new state-of-the-art border management system which changes the way that the EU manages its external borders. It is one of the world’s most modern border management system and replaces the current system of manual passport stamping. It is the backbone of the EU’s new migration and asylum system and enables authorities to identify people who pose a security risk, visa-overstayers and prevent identity fraud more effectively.
From 10 April 2026, the EES is fully operational, and passport stamping is replaced with electronic records in the system. With the EES, we know who enters the European Union and Schengen area, where and when.
