The EU, chaired by Joelle Hivonnet, Head of Political Section, the Member States and like-minded countries discuss gender-based violence with the president of the Korean Institute for Gender Equality Promotion and Education (KIGEPE) to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the start of the international campaign '16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence', on Friday, 25th of November.

Background

The international campaign '16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence' is organised each year as part of the UN Secretary General's global UNiTE campaign, convening individuals and organisations worldwide to end violence against women and girls. The 16 Days of Activism runs from 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to 10 December (Human Rights Day), also encompassing other important dates.

The visual identifier of the campaign is the orange colour, which symbolises a brighter future for women without violence. Landmark buildings around the world will be lit up in orange in the context of the Campaign and organisations and individuals have been invited to launch public diplomacy activities, preferably bearing the orange colour. You will find pictures of past editions of the 16 Days Campaign on the webpage of UN Women – see galleries from 2014 and 2015. This year's Campaign page can be found here. The EU has been a fully committed partner in the global action to end violence against women, and EU institutions have a tradition of joining the 16 Days Campaign.
