EU Launches Human Rights and Democracy Country Strategy for Uganda

On 29 November, the EU and its Member States officially launched the Human Rights and Democracy Country Strategy for Uganda at a colourful ceremony

The European Union Head of Delegation to Uganda and the 10 European Union Heads of Mission in the country had the pleasure of launching the EU Human Rights and Democracy Country Strategy for Uganda, detailing seven priority areas of engagement with the people and government of Uganda.

Uganda #RIO2016 Para Olympic Champion, Mr David Emong was Chief Guest at the colourful launch ceremony held at the residence of the EU head of Delegation, H.E Ambassador Kristian Schmidt in Kampala. Mr Emong shared his life's story, telling how he overcame grave challenges challenges in spite his disability to succeed at a global arena.

In attendance were several dignitaries and representatives of the Government of Uganda, Civil Society Organisations, the Media, Political Parties and the diplomatic community. Guests were treated to artistic expressions of some of the key priority areas in the form of poetry, drama and song from three Ugandan entertainers and a choir of the EU Delegation. The EU will work closely with its Member States, State and Non-State actors, civil society and development partners, including the UN agencies to implement the strategy.

"Yes, the road is long.  But at the same time, our partnership with Uganda and with Ugandans is strong and full of ambitions.  I welcome the representatives of government and civil society today, knowing that together, we can achieve our ambitions," said Ambassador Schmidt.

The strategy identifies seven priority areas which the European Union jointly with its Member States will pursue in Uganda. Various speakers, including EU Heads of Mission, Senior Government and CSO officials, presented a brief outlook on each of the seven priorities. These are:

• Freedom of Assembly, Association, Expression, Freedom of Press

• Accountability and Anti-corruption

• Transitional Justice

• Human Rights Defenders and Abolition of the Death Penalty

• Children's Rights

• Women's Rights and Gender Equality

• Anti-Discrimination
