First EU-Algeria high-level informal dialogue on regional security and the fight against terrorism
High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini and the Algerian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Abdelkader Messahel, chaired the launch of the first EU-Algeria high-level informal dialogue on regional security and the fight against terrorism in Brussels on 19 October 2017.
Their exchanges covered regional challenges, in particular the situation in Libya and the Sahel region and the fight against terrorism.
Federica Mogherini reiterated the EU’s determination to ensure that the potential for security cooperation with Algeria, one of its major regional partners, is fully realised. ‘Algeria is an important regional partner of the EU in the area of security, counter‑terrorism and de-radicalisation. We therefore hope that this biannual high‑level informal dialogue will provide a platform to strengthen our cooperation,’ High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini said at the end of her meeting with her Algerian counterpart.
The High Representative/Vice-President and the Minister agreed to continue their collaboration and regular dialogue on these issues, one of the aims being to implement the Partnership Priorities concluded by the EU and Algeria in March 2017.
Their meeting was followed by a dialogue between high-level officials, who explored the possibilities of developing their practical cooperation by addressing the challenges posed by terrorism and radicalisation.
