The Political Dialogue Meeting between Ghana and the European Union (EU) took place on 6 June 2016 in Accra. It was co-chaired by Ghana's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Ms. Hanna TETTEH and H.E. William HANNA, EU Ambassador in Ghana. The meeting brought together Ambassadors and representatives of all nine accredited EU Member States in Ghana and representatives of the various Government institutions such as the Ministry of Finance, Foreign Affairs and and the National Authorising Officer. The Minister for Finance, Defence and the Interior were present.

 The Political Dialogue Meeting was organised in the framework of Cotonou Agreement which provided a comprehensive, balanced and deep political dialogue and enhanced cooperation guided by the fundamental principles of ownership and joint responsibility, respect for human rights, good governance, democratic principles and the rule of law.

The meeting opened with a welcome address by Ms. Tetteh.  She said the long relationship between Ghana and the EU, and the various cooperation's over the years, has impacted the lives of Ghanaians.  She said "the engagement this morning gives us the opportunity to expand on the issues under discussion and how to address the challenges that exist.  We look forward to fruitful discussions that will come out with more clear way forward to influence what happens in Ghana in the next six months".

Ambassador Hanna in response highlighted some of the key issues discussed with Ghana over the past year, including migration and the Valetta Action Plan, Climate Change, trade and sustainable development goals. He mentioned that over the past year the EU consulted civil society organisations to capture their views in  the dialogue.  He highlighted progress over the past year in the areas of fisheries, with the lifting of the "yellow card" and the contribution that the EU budget support had made to macroeconomic success, following the agreement with the IMF and the payroll action plan.

The issues discussed included regional affairs and security, migration issues, governance and elections, economy and trade and also the partnership for sustainable development.

Prior to this meeting the EU Ambassadors from the Accredited countries in Ghana, met briefly at the Residency of the Head of the EU in Ghana.
