About the EOM Timor-Leste
The European Union Election Observation Mission is headed by Chief Observer Mr. Domènec Ruiz Devesa, a member of the European Parliament since 2019. The EU EOM is further composed of a Core Team of eight election analysts, who arrived in Dili in mid-February. The mission also has 26 Long-Term Observers from 17 different EU member states who were deployed across the country on 25 February.
EU observers will follow all stages of the electoral process, including the campaign period, polling, counting, and any electoral disputes. The mission will also undertake a comprehensive monitoring of traditional and social media. A number of locally recruited Short Term Observers will reinforce the mission on election day. Around 50 local Timorese staff are supporting the work.
The EU previously also deployed Election Observation Missions to Timor-Leste for the 2002, 2007, 2012, and 2017 elections. An Expert Mission was deployed in 2018 for early parliamentary elections.
