Foreign Affairs Council meets Secretary General and Icelandic Presidency of the Council of Europe in Luxembourg

On 24 April, Marija Pejčinović Burić, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, and Þórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörð Gylfadóttir, Foreign Affairs Minister of Iceland currently in charge of the rotating Presidency of the CoE Committee of Ministers, attended an informal breakfast meeting in the framework of the Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg. In further proof that the EU-Council of Europe high-level dialogue is gathering steam ahead of the Fourth Summit, the meeting confirmed, among other things, the firm support of the EU and its member States for setting up a register of damage under the auspices of the Council of Europe, with regard to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.

At the meeting chaired by the HR/VP Josep Borrell, member States through the voice of their Foreign Affairs Ministers reiterated support for the role of the Council of Europe on the topic of accountability for Ukraine, notably on the aspect of establishing a register to document the damage, loss and injury caused by the Russian aggression. Participants also stressed the need to address democratic backsliding across Europe and to continue to engage with civil society, also in Russia and Belarus. The execution of judgements of the European Court of Human Rights by member States was also signaled as a core obligation in view of guaranteeing effective protection of fundamental rights.
