Promising results of the “One Desert Initiative” meeting in Mauritania

“EUBAM Libya is looking forward with high expectations to the next meeting of the ‘One Desert Initiative’”, states EUBAM Libya’s Border Adviser Davide Silvestri. The final day of the Nouakchott meeting on May 11, 2023 has been dedicated to set the foundations for a roadmap of activities to be jointly implemented by the participant countries with the support of the EU. The committee itself performed in engaging on ambitious but practical subjects, such as exchange of information, and strengthening local communities on border management and security. Great importance was also attached to the topics of the reinforcement of capacity building including training and border management as well as security, enhancing the operational framework and judicial action of information.

Closing the workshop, Emanuela Del Re, European Union Special Representative (EUSR) for the Sahel, commended the joint effort to create a common roadmap. She supported the outcomes of the workshop and specifically highlighted the need to consider the judicial aspects of cross-border information exchange and to integrate local communities into the transnational efforts of integrated border management.
Background
As a follow-up of the Regional Conference on Libya-Sahel cross-border cooperation held in Tunis in November 2022, the meeting of the "One Desert Initiative" committee which included Burkina Faso, Chad, Libya, Mali, Mauritania and Niger, was launched from 10 till 11 May 2023 in Nouakchott, Mauritania. The initiative was jointly organized by RACC and EUBAM Libya.

The goal was to discuss practical ways to enhance cooperation among the border authorities in the region, in coordination with international stakeholders. A roadmap, which took into consideration best practices in border management and addressing cross border crimes, while promoting trade and development, was envisaged. The participants discussed the main items of the roadmap that were reached after an intense discussion among all members.
