The European Union and African Union mark this year their 25th Anniversary of partnership, a celebration that highlights a shared journey of dialogue, cooperation, and commitment to peace, prosperity, and Multilateralism across both continents.

This year, the European Union and African Union mark their 25 years of partnership, a celebration that highlights a shared journey of dialogue, cooperation, and commitment to peace, prosperity, and Multilateralism across both continents.

The EU Delegation in Mozambique joined the movement of celebration and organized a dynamic and engaging public debate that brought together key voices to reflect on shared achievements and future challenges. The event featured high-level speakers, including Mozambique’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Maria de Fátima Manso; the EU Ambassador to Mozambique, Antonino Maggiore; the EU Ambassador to the African Union, Javier Niño Pérez; the academics Professor José Jaime Macuane from Eduardo Mondlane University, and Professor Paul-Simon Handy from the Institute for Security Studies, as well as African and European diplomats accredited in Mozambique.

The discussion underscored the essential role of Multilateralism as a cornerstone for sustainable cooperation—aligning shared goals and supporting the implementation of Africa’s Agenda 2063. On the occasion, EU to AU Ambassador Pérez reaffirmed a central message: “the European Union is Africa’s biggest partner, and together, both continents are building bridges toward a future rooted in peace, prosperity and solidarity”.

The participants, in general, praised the links between the EU and AU, but also highlighted the need for both continents and organizations to adjust to challenging global circumstances and ensure shared values and principles prevail and common objectives and goals are met.

The event in Maputo was part of a broader series of celebrations across Africa and Europe, commemorating a unique and evolving partnership that continues to shape global dialogue.
