Kuwait and EU Celebrate Women’s Leadership in Green Transition at Landmark Event

Ahead of Kuwait Women’s Day and as part of Europe Month activities in Kuwait, Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR), in cooperation with the European Union Delegation to the State of Kuwait, the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain to the State of Kuwait and the EU-GCC Cooperation on Green Transition Project organized an event on “Empowering Women in the Green Transition: Science, Society & Skills.”

The event, which gathered high-level speakers from the European Commission, Spain and Kuwait,  celebrated the important role of women in advancing sustainability across science, business, education, and community engagement, both in Kuwait and in the European Union. The morning opened with the opening of the exhibition “GEAS: Women Who Study the Earth,” presented by the Geological Society of Spain, which highlighted the contributions of women in geosciences and environmental leadership.

Welcoming attendees, Dr. Faisal S. AlHumaidan, Acting Director General of KISR, underlined the institute’s commitment to advancing women’s roles in environmental research: “At KISR, we believe that empowering women scientists and innovators is essential to achieving Kuwait’s environmental goals. By enabling their leadership, we strengthen the solutions we need for the challenges ahead.”

In her opening remarks, H.E. Anne Koistinen, European Union Ambassador to Kuwait, emphasized the EU’s commitment to women’s empowerment and climate action: “This event builds on the excellent cooperation we have had over the past years with different sectors of the Kuwaiti government and society on the important nexus of women and environment. Empowering women is at the heart of the European Union’s Green Deal and our global partnerships. By supporting women’s leadership in science, innovation, and policy, we help drive progress toward a sustainable and inclusive future, not only for Europe and Kuwait, but for the world we share.”

H.E. Manuel Hernández Gamallo, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain to Kuwait, added: “Spain is proud to bring voices from Spain to this important conversation. Women have a great role to play in the green transition, with leading roles in research, entrepreneurship, and policy development.”

The programme featured panel discussions exploring women’s leadership in scientific research, green innovation, business, law, and community action. Speakers from Kuwait, Spain, and the EU shared insights and personal experiences with an audience of students, academics, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and civil society representatives. The event concluded with a networking lunch, offering participants the chance to connect, exchange ideas, and build collaborations to support women’s contributions to sustainability in Kuwait and beyond.
