Federica Mogherini, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, spoke yesterday by phone with the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Korea, Ms Kang Kyung-wha.

Text

They discussed the latest developments on the Korean Peninsula including preparations for the planned summit meeting between the leaders of the United States and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. High Representative/Vice-President Mogherini reiterated that the European Union would continue to work for the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula and that it would fully support a negotiated, peaceful solution in any way possible. She expressed her sincere appreciation for the efforts of the Republic of Korea and the leadership of President Moon, which have led to promising progress having been made in the inter-Korean relationship and on the diplomatic track since the beginning of the year. High Representative Mogherini and Minister Kang stressed the need for this positive momentum to be maintained.

They also touched upon the importance of continuing with the full and effective implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action – the Iran nuclear deal – in light of the United States' withdrawal. The High Representative underlined that the EU remains committed to this as long as Iran continues to implement its commitments, which it is doing, and also informed the Minister of the measures being taken by the European Union to ensure continued economic relations with Iran.

High Representative Mogherini and Minister Kang agreed to stay in close contact over the coming weeks.
