Chair of the EU Military Committee completes visit to EUNAVFOR Operation Aspides and EUTM Somalia
From 25 to 29 January 2023, the Chair of the European Union Military Committee undertook a significant visit to key EU military operations in the Horn of Africa, namely EUNAVFOR Operation ASPIDES and the EUTM Somalia. This strategic visit underscores the EU's unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region.
During the visit, the Chair was apprised of the latest developments and operational activities undertaken by EUNAVFOR ASPIDES, a pivotal maritime operation aimed at countering piracy and ensuring the safety of maritime routes vital for international trade. The operation hones its focus on protecting freedom of navigation, safeguarding maritime security, especially for merchant and commercial vessels in the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Gulf under the EU Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP).
The Chair also visited EUTM Somalia, an essential component of the EU's support to the Somali Government in building a professional and accountable security sector. This mission plays a crucial role in enhancing the capabilities of the Somali National Army through tailored training and mentoring programmes, fostering a secure environment conducive to growth and development.
During this period, meetings were held with key personnel, including operation commanders, local authorities, and partner organisations. These discussions emphasised cooperation, solidarity, and the ongoing commitment of the EU to support the stability and security of the region. The Chair expressed his appreciation for the professionalism and dedication of all involved, recognising their efforts in advancing the EU's strategic objectives in the Horn of Africa.
The visit is a testament to the EU's sustained engagement and its support for international peacekeeping efforts. It reaffirms the importance of collaboration amongst EU Member States and partners to address security challenges and enhance regional stability.
