EU Military Committee: Meeting at Chiefs of Defence level
Brussels, 20 May 2026 – The European Union Military Committee (EUMC) today convened at the Chiefs of Defence (CHODs) level in Brussels for its semi-annual meeting, chaired by General Seán Clancy. The high-level gathering brought together the military leaders of all 27 EU Member States, alongside key partners, to address pressing security challenges, reinforce defence readiness, and advance the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP).
A pivotal moment for European Defence, the European Union Military Committee Meeting at CHODS level only takes place twice annually. Today being the first meeting this year. Since the previous conference, last October, there have been significant developments in a continuously unpredictable and tumultuous geopolitical environment.
As the EU continues navigating in an increasingly uncertain world, the strategic vision and military expertise of the EUMC will remain essential to contributing to stability, peace, security and the protection of European values and interests. Meanwhile, although substantial tangible progress has been achieved by the EUMC, additional strategic steps are necessary.
High Representative and Vice-President Kaja Kallas and Defence and Space Commissioner Andrius Kubilius delivered keynote addresses, emphasising the critical role that military advice has in shaping EU security policy. Their participation highlighted the growing synergy between political leadership and military expertise in addressing contemporary threats.
Against the backdrop of an increasingly uncertain political and security landscape, the meeting focused on the new Security Strategy, Defence Readiness and continued support for Ukraine. The discussions were framed by recent developments, which underscore the EU’s commitment to strengthening its defence capabilities and its commitment to the security paradigm.
The EU’s continued military assistance to Ukraine amid Russia’s ongoing aggression formed a central part of discussions. The Ukrainian CHOD, General Oleksandr Syrskyi briefed the assembly via VTC. CHODs. reviewed Ukrainian capability requirements, ensuring alignment with evolving battlefield needs. Enhanced coordination between the EU Military Assistance Mission Ukraine (EUMAM UA) and the Coalition of the Willing ensures, a multinational effort to sustain long-term support. The EU remains steadfast in its commitment to Ukraine’s defence, with the EUMC playing a pivotal role in coordinating training, equipment deliveries, and strategic planning.
The meeting concluded with the adoption of CHODs’ conclusions. General Seán Clancy remarked in his closing address that today’s discussions reinforced the EUMC’s role being critical to EU defence policy. In an era of multipolar competition and persistent threats, our collective strength lies in unity, readiness, and innovation.
Security through Unity and Credibility through Capability.
