Cultural Heritage Meets Blue Economy in Lamu
The extraordinary beauty, great diversity and cultural wealth of Kenya's coastal areas have made them an important engine for Kenya's Blue Economy. For instance, the UNESCO listed Lamu Old Town attracts and enchants an increasing number of tourists, especially from European countries. In fact, Lamu Old Town is the oldest and best preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa. The annual Lamu Cultural Festival celebrates precisely this unique and captivating Swahili culture.
The Festival is a showcase of the rich and diverse cultural heritage including traditions such as dhow and monkey races, dancing and music performances, as well as a display of poetry, food, arts and crafts. Moreover, it is an engine for economic and social development as hotels are fully booked and tourism is vital for Lamu. At this year's edition of the cultural festival, the European Union will contribute to the dhow race, as well as two stands of activities with and for young people.
EU Ambassador Stefano A. Dejak notes:
"The Lamu Cultural Festival is an opportunity for young people to be rightly proud of their culture. Those who are aware and proud of their identity are also happier to contribute to the life of their societies. The Festival is a celebration of Lamu's traditional values, reminding all of us of the long and fascinating history of peaceful Swahili values, traditionally acting as a bridge across many different cultures united by the so called "Trade Winds", the Monsoon. I therefore applaud the Lamu Cultural Festival rich community spirit."
The European Union has supported the Lamu Cultural Festival for numerous years and we acknowledge the crucial role it plays, not only in celebrating the rich culture in Lamu but also in preserving and passing these traditions from one generation to another. This year, the European Union not only marks the Year of Cultural Heritage, but culture is at the heart of the European Union's external action. Cultural heritage is a major asset for Europe and an important component of the European integration process based on common values and common history.
