The launch, attended by the Mayor, Councilors and residents of Mbabane, took place at the Prince of Wales stadium in Mbabane.

The project, funded to the tune of 250 000 Euros (approx. 4.1 million SZL), will focus on waste recycling and food waste composting, thereby ensuring a green environment and the health of the people of Mbabane.

In her address during the event, Ambassador Hernandez Aragones, said the EU recognizes the important role played by Local Authorities in issues of governance, development and service delivery, hence the EU support to this project.

The Ambassador said Local Authorities are essential in building the foundations for broad-based democratic ownership of development policies and processes as well as inclusive growth.

She hoped the project will go a long way in addressing the issue of waste which she said poses a big challenge to the green environment and the health of the people.

"The storage, collection, transportation and final treatment or disposal of waste has become a major problem in urban centres and this calls for the adoption of innovative and integrated approached to waste management utilizing the latest technology and skills in order to turn waste into productive inputs for business opportunities and income generation for our communities," said the Ambassador.

Speaking on the same occasion, the Mayor of Mbabane, Zephaniah Nkambule, extended the City Council's gratitude to the EU for supporting this initiative by the Council.

Nkambule said the project will no doubt contribute immensely to the development of Mbabane and ensuring a green environment for the city and its residents.
