Gender Equality and the Socio-Economic Consequences of the COVID-19 Crisis
Jointly organised by the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union,
the European Commission and the European Women’s Lobby
OBJECTIVE
The socio-economic downturn, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and containment measures, is having devastating impact and deepening pre-existing gender inequality. This unprecedented crisis calls for innovative solutions to ensure that the post-COVID era is gender equal. Unless a gender perspective is fully embedded in short term emergency and long-term recovery measures, these are expected to aggravate and undo the progress achieved thus far. This side event aims to reflect on the socioeconomic impact of COVID-19 and the need to create gender-responsive policies, based on a forward-looking agenda on gender equality at the EU and international level.
