Ambassador Erika Hasznos , Head of Delegation to Papua New Guinea
Welcome to the official website of the European Union Delegation to Papua New Guinea!
The European Union has had diplomatic presence in Papua New Guinea since 1977, almost since the independence of the country. I have had the privilege of arriving in time for the country’s 50th anniversary of independence. I look forward to jointly celebrating our bilateral 50th anniversary in 2027.
During my mission I will focus on enhancing the three pillars of our strong and balanced relationship: political; economic & trade; and development cooperation pillars.
Politically, we share fundamental foreign policy principles such as peaceful coexistence, upholding the international law and respect of the multilateral global system. We can do much together to expand our partnership for peace and stability in our region and globally. The Samoa Agreement provides the framework for regular political dialogue.
The European Union is one of the few partners that have a free trade agreement in place with Papua New Guinea, through the Economic Partnership Agreement. The EU is the 4th export destination for goods from Papua New Guinea and there is room for further diversification.
We are cooperating on the ground on a number of challenges reflected in our programmes’s objectives: Climate change; Water, Sanitation and Hygiene; Rural Entrepreneurship, Trade and Investment; and last but not least, Good governance, human rights and empowering youth and civil society. We are developing major investment projects in connectivity and infrastructure through our Global Gateway strategy.
The European Delegation team and myself look forward to engaging with you. Please follow the latest developments on this website and our social media.
