About the Ambassador

Thorsten Bargfrede was appointed EU Ambassador to Timor-Leste in September 2025 and was accredited by the President of Republic on 15th of September 2025. His assignment will be for three years and he is commited to further deepen and expand the excellent relations that exist between the European Union and Timor-Leste. 

Thorsten Bargfrede is a seasoned diplomat with a distinguished career in the European External Action Service. He brings extensive experience from key postings in New York, Geneva, Moscow, Pakistan, Kenya, Sri Lanka and Brussels, with a focus on political affairs, trade, defence and security as well as development cooperation. 

Ambassador Thorsten is from Germany, he is married and has a daughter.

EU and Timor-Leste: Like-minded partners

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the homepage of the Delegation of the European Union to the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste.  

The European Union (EU) and Timor-Leste have had a close and fruitful relationship since independence was restored to Timor-Leste. The European Union and Timor-Leste see eye-to-eye on today's global challenges, from fighting climate change and poverty, to strengthening stability in an increasingly volatile world, to defending democratic principles, human rights, multilateralism, and a rules-based global order. Our close partnership makes us stronger and reinforces our capacity to deliver changes that improve lives.

The European Union enjoys strong political relations with Timor-Leste, and we are also a proud development partner, supporting the country in its drive to meet the Sustainable Development Goals.

I am honoured by the responsibility of leading our competent team to strengthen the EU-Timor-Leste relationship in all its aspects, both in bilateral terms and through cooperation at the regional and multilateral levels to address global challenges.
