"The European Union has fought and is still fighting every day for the respect of its fundamental values of which the respect of human rights, including the rights of people who belong to minorities.

Combating hatred and discrimination against Muslims and people perceived to be Muslims is an integral part of the broader work on combating racism and discrimination. It is about protecting the rights of individuals and not of a religion in particular.

Acts of violence and incitement to hatred against Muslims are not compatible with the values on which the EU was founded. They increase the feeling of insecurity for our fellow-citizens.

I am well aware about the multiple discriminations and harassment that Muslim women face today in Europe. It is also true for some minorities and subgroups within the Muslim community, which overall represent the biggest religious minority in Europe.

Far from giving in to a logic of victimization, we want to build together the Europe of tomorrow, a Europe based on a Union of equality.

It is particularly important that we collect unbiased information about hatred and discrimination against Muslims and people who are perceived as Muslim. Without reliable data at EU level, it is impossible to get a full picture of the extent of the phenomenon and thus to calibrate policies.

I will work tirelessly hand in hand with civil society organisations, Member States, EU institutions, international organisations and researchers. In addition, I develop close cooperation with other coordinators: for example, with the coordinators dealing with the fight against racism, antisemitism, terrorism and with the dialogue between religious and non-confessional organizations.

We must promote a culture of equality throughout the EU."
