Celebrate Europe Day with us!

The European Union Delegation to Aotearoa New Zealand has the pleasure to offer you a free ride on the famous Wellington funicular in partnership with Wellington Cable Car to celebrate Europe Day.

You will have the chance to experience a beautiful view of the city while traveling through two tunnels reminiscent of Van Gogh's work, one lit with the EU flag and the second with sunflowers in support of Ukraine.

On Wellington waterfront, you will also see the Michael Fowler Center lit with the blue and yellow colours on the evening of Europe Day. These colors symbolize the EU's solidarity with the people of Ukraine and our goal of working for a strong and secure Europe.

Europe Day Significance

Europe Day is a moment to look back on the history of the EU and recognize the importance of its values, which include peace, solidarity and unity in diversity.

On the 9th of May 1950, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman presented his historic proposal for an integrated European coal and steel community, indispensable to the maintenance of peaceful relations. This proposal, known as the "Schuman declaration," is considered to be the founding document of what is now the European Union.
