Global Gateway
Global Gateway is the European strategy to boost smart, clean and secure connections in digital, energy and transport sectors, and to strengthen health, education and research systems across the world. Through a 'Team Europe approach', Global Gateway brings together the EU, its Member States and their financial and development institutions to mobilise the private sector to leverage investments promoting sustainable growth.
Between 2021 and 2027, Team Europe is mobilising up to €300 billion of investments for sustainable, transformational and high-quality projects, taking into account the needs of partner countries and ensuring lasting benefits for local communities. This allows EU’s partners to create resilient and sustainable societies and economies, but also create opportunities for the EU Member States’ private sector to invest and remain competitive, whilst ensuring the highest environmental and labour standards, as well as sound financial management.
Global Gateway offer in ASEAN
Together with relevant ASEAN strategies, the Global Gateway provides the framework for EU cooperation in the region, guiding in particular initiatives in the areas of sustainable connectivity as well as green and inclusive development.
The delivery of the Global Gateway in the ASEAN combines regional actions together with flagship projects at country level.
The main regional actions are the Team Europe Initiatives (TEI) on the green transition and on sustainable connectivity, through which the EU and its Member States mobilise resources for coordinated cooperation with ASEAN counterparts. The green transition TEI includes projects in areas such as energy, circular economy, biodiversity and sustainable landscapes, sustainable food systems, as well as green and smart cities. The connectivity TEI includes projects dealing with energy connectivity, transport, trade, economic connectivity and sustainable value chains, digitalisation, as well as higher education and people to people connectivity.
The EU has already allocated EUR 105 million in grant funding to these two initiatives through its regional multiannual programme 2021-2027, which includes an indicative allocation of EUR 180 million for cooperation with ASEAN.
This regional allocation contributes to facilitate investments through partnerships with Finance Institutions such as the EIB or ADB and projects supporting infrastructure projects preparation. It also complements bilateral flagships implemented at country level covering all Global Gateway priority areas including climate and energy, health, education and research, digitalisation and transport.
