Funded traineeship for young graduates at the EU Delegation to Botswana and SADC
We offer:
A traineeshipof 6 months in 2026 within the Political, Press and Information Section of the EU Delegation in Gaborone, Botswana. The tentative start date is in June 2026.
The Political, Press and Information (PPI) Section monitors and analyses political developments in the host country and region to inform EU foreign policy. It maintains dialogue with government institutions, civil society, and international partners. The section reports on political, security, and governance issues to EU institutions in Brussels. It also manages the Delegation’s public diplomacy, strategic communication, and media relations. This includes explaining EU policies, promoting EU values, and increasing the visibility of EU cooperation programmes. The PPI section organises events, outreach activities, and public campaigns, while coordinating messaging with EU Member States. It also supports visits of EU officials and Heads of Mission, ensuring coherent political engagement and communication.
Main tasks:
- Research on political, social, human rights and economic topics; contribution to various reports, including political and meeting reports in order to raise the EU profile in Botswana and SADC, and to increase understanding of the role of the EU in Botswana and SADC;
- Assisting in monitoring and producing analysis on the political, security, social and economic situation in Botswana and SADC as well as field visits to Botswana and the region;
- Assistance with preparations of briefings and organisation of meetings / events;
- Assistance with producing, translating and compiling communication materials and social media content in the framework of the Delegation’s communication strategy; contributing to media and social media activities of the Delegation, including events and activities relating to information and communication (information campaigns, events, exhibitions);
- Assisting in developing relations with the Delegations’ interlocutors in the academia, civil society and local media;
- General assistance to the Political, Press and Information Section.
We look for:
Qualifications or special requirements:
- Very good analytical skills;
- Excellent oral and written knowledge of English language.
- Knowledge of EU CFSP and international relations / politics and already having worked in a diplomatic environment would be an asset.
- Experience in the areas of communications, social media or press-related work would be an asset.
- Multicultural understanding.
- Interpersonal and teamwork skills, initiative and enthusiasm. Capacity to work autonomously
- Ability to work under pressure.
- Strong drafting and analytical skills.

Important information to read before applying
Before applying you are requested to examine the dedicated website as well as the general eligibility criteria for a paid traineeship (Article 8 of the Decision ADMIN(2017)28 – Paid traineeship).
Each selected trainee will receive a monthly grant to cover living expenses. All costs related to travels, visa, insurance, accommodation must be borne by the trainee.
Applications from non-eligible candidates will not be considered. After the evaluation of all applications, shortlisted candidates will be contacted and invited for an interview. Unsuccessful candidates will be notified by email. In case the selected candidates are not able to present the required documents, their application will be rejected.
The traineeships can only be offered in compliance with the local legislation as well as the legislation of the country of origin.
Citizens from EU Member states:
- must provide proof that they will be covered against the risk of a pandemic and the costs of repatriation;
- must hold a relevant entrance visa and / or temporary residence permit where applicable, based on the traineeship agreement, the duration of the traineeship, and in compliance with the local legislation.
