We are

The European Union (EU) is an economic and political partnership between 27 European countries. It plays an important role in international affairs through diplomacy, trade, development cooperation and working with global organisations. Abroad, the EU is represented through more than 140 diplomatic representations, known also as EU Delegations, which have a similar function to those of an embassy.

The EU Delegation to China is responsible for the conduct of official relations between China and the European Union. In all matters pertaining to the European Union, the Delegation works closely with the diplomatic missions of the EU Member States, particularly the one representing the EU Presidency, which changes every six months.

We offer

We offer a post of an Assistant working in the Political, Press & Information Section. Under this post, the recruited person will be attributed functions depending on the needs of the Delegation. Upon recruitment, the successful candidate will occupy a specific job function as an Assistant; this job function may be changed in accordance with the needs of the Delegation. Under this job function, the successful candidate will serve as support staff to:

 

  • Monitoring, analysis and reporting through multiple channels
  • Monitor, analyse and translate Chinese policy documents, speeches by top leaders and other official, academic and open Chinese language sources on domestic and foreign policy
  • Prepare analysis using primary sources in Chinese
  • Proactively follow China’s political and media landscape, including social media
  • Liaison and communication actions
  • Contribute to the EU Delegation’s communication actions, including through text editing and the preparation of visual materials
  • Manage social network channels, providing social network support for events and visits when needed; Coordinate with third parties such as EU Member States and other outside entities in relation to the EU Delegation’s visibility and communication activities
  • Liaison with relevant Chinese authorities; Engage with academia, think-tanks and scholars
  • Operational and administrative support and resources
  • Manage protocol/logistics for high level EU political dialogue meetings
  • Support the Section in the organization of meetings and events
  • Organize and accompany diplomats to attend meetings with authorities, think tanks, etc.
  • Assist in translation of various materials on media, website and social media
  • Contribute to maintaining the EU Delegation web site
  • Other tasks assigned by the Head of Section

Under the supervision and responsibility of the Head of Political, Press & Information Section.

Place of employment is located in China, Beijing. The weekly working hours are 37.5h.  The starting basic gross salary of a LA II is 20253 CNY.  We offer a competitive position in an international environment. Selection Criteria

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Medically fit to perform the required duties;
  2. Enjoys civil rights and permits for employment under local law;
  3. Native Chinese and fluent English with the ability to translate and interpret between the two languages;
  4. High School degree;
  • At least 3 years' professional work experience that is functionally relevant in the field of politics, governance, international relations
  1. Intellectual knowledge:
  • Ability to conduct research, understand complexities of political and economic nature
  • Translation skills, conference interpretation procedures
  • Press and media, including social media skills
  • Document management techniques
  1. Interpersonal skills:
  • Ability to work both independently and as a part of a team in a constructive manner;
  • Ability to listen, to consult and to share information and ideas;
  • Capacity to communicate clearly, present complex matters in a simple way both in oral and written forms.
  1. Management/Organizational skills:
  • Capacity to focus on priorities and to organize work to deliver on time;
  • Ability to negotiate in a multicultural and multilingual environment;
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet tight deadlines

The following will be considered an asset:

  1. University degree in the fields related to the functions and duties above mentioned;

Personal qualities:

  • Commitment to work with quality, speed and accuracy;
  • High degree of responsibility and discretion;
  • Flexibility to work under pressure and sometimes above normal working schedule and to respond quickly to new demands;
  • Strong sense of confidentiality and diplomacy;
  • Proven problem-solving abilities.

The procedure

After the deadline for applications, the applications will be reviewed by a Selection Committee set up for this purpose. The Selection Committee will prepare a short-list of candidates who are considered to be the most suitable for the post on the basis of a preliminary assessment of the information provided in their application letter and the supporting documents. The short-listed candidates will be invited to an assessment phase which may include an interview if necessary – during this phase, the Selection Committee will assess the suitability of the candidates for the post.

The candidates who have not been short-listed will not be contacted individually; however, the Delegation will use the same means of publication as for this Vacancy Notice to inform the remaining candidates once the recruitment procedure has been completed and that a candidate has (or has not) been recruited.
