EU Statements at the Council of Europe in March 2024

On 6 March 2024, the EU delivered a statement at the Committee of Ministers, saying it deeply regrets the execution of Ivan Cantu in the State of Texas, and the State of Idaho's resumption of the capital punishment after a 12-year break. The EU called for states that maintain the death penalty to implement a moratorium and move towards abolition, in line with the worldwide trend.
On 20 March 2024, the EU delivered a statement at the Committee of Ministers meeting condemning the illegal holding of so-called “elections” in the territories of Ukraine that Russia has temporarily occupied. The EU urged Russia to respect Ukraine's internationally recognized borders and sovereignty, and reminded that the so-called “elections” in these territories represent yet another manifest violation by Russia of international law, including the UN Charter, and of Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
