Foreign Affairs Council meets Secretary General and Icelandic Presidency of the Council of Europe in Luxembourg
At the meeting chaired by the HR/VP Josep Borrell, member States through the voice of their Foreign Affairs Ministers reiterated support for the role of the Council of Europe on the topic of accountability for Ukraine, notably on the aspect of establishing a register to document the damage, loss and injury caused by the Russian aggression. Participants also stressed the need to address democratic backsliding across Europe and to continue to engage with civil society, also in Russia and Belarus. The execution of judgements of the European Court of Human Rights by member States was also signaled as a core obligation in view of guaranteeing effective protection of fundamental rights.
