HISTOLAB: Innovating history education

Under the joint project, the partners shared experiences and best practices, as well as developed useful learning activities to be implemented in classrooms to foster innovative teaching, critical thinking, and to develop competences in assessing historical information, in recognising and debunking fake news and hate speech.
The project´s main annual event entitled ‘’European Innovation Days in History Education’’ in Strasbourg. For the 2023 edition there were 30 applications which increased to 108 applications for the 2024 second edition.
The Digital Hub online platform, launched in April 2023, continues to make available relevant publications and facilitates opportunities for multi-stakeholder dialogue and exchanges of knowledge. Its aim is to bring together different actors to discuss the possibility for innovation and progress in how history is being taught, and which histories appear on the national curricula. With over 200 resources available, the Digital Hub has up to 238 members and sends a monthly newsletter to 460 subscribers.
The project developed tutorials on how to teach Roma history and culture, gender perspective in history teaching, social and ethnic minorities, videogames in the history classroom, ways to teach in times of wars and innovative teaching practices. These tutorials, along with the Toolkit for History Classes: Debunking Fake News and Fostering Critical Thinking designed by history education experts with 11 individual activities planned, all supported Council of Europe's strategies for inclusion, democratic citizenship, and combatting disinformation.
The publication of the HISTOLAB Fellowship in May 2023 was another of the project´s milestones. With 10 applications received, four papers were selected and published in September 2024.
The project also awarded the two editions of the HISTOLAB Award for Innovative School Projects in History Education, selecting projects created by the students with the support of their teachers, encouraging them to think critically not only about what history they learn, but how they learn, and the types of creative projects that spark their interest in these classes.
HISTOLAB gathered best practices and ideas on innovation in history education from diverse parts of Europe and the world during its implementation, including all 46 Council of Europemember states and beyond.
