On 6 September 2022, Ambassador Vesna Batistić Kos presented her credentials to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejčinović Burić, thereby taking up her function as Head of the EU Delegation to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. Prior to the current posting, Ambassador Batistić Kos served as Permanent Representative of Croatia to the United Nations Office at Geneva since 2015.

When the Ambassador handed her credentials to the Secretary General, both sides reiterated close cooperation between the EU and the Council of Europe, increasingly important in the view of the current challenges posed by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and the consequent expulsion of the country from the Council of Europe. The EU will continue to strongly support this strategic partnership with the Council of Europe in safeguarding common values of democracy, human rights and the rule of law, as well as in promoting the rule-based international order.

Ambassador Batistić Kos reaffirmed the importance of the standard setting role of the Council of Europe, the EU’s support for the existing Conventions system, as well as the commitment to accede to  the European Convention on Human Rights. The complementarity of our organisations’ roles has allowed both to benefit from each other’s strengths, expertise and competencies. In this same vein, the EU will continue to draw on the Council of Europe’s expertise in the rule of law field as well as in joint programmes in particular in the Enlargement and Neighbourhood regions.
