EU Week 2025 Celebrations in Eritrea
On 6 May, the Delegations welcomed 25 students aged 12-14 from a local school for its annual “Speakdate & Quiz” event. The students rotated between three themed stations: a language corner where they learned basic phrases in four EU languages (French, German, Italian, and Spanish); an EU-themed Quiz that tested their knowledge of European history and culture; and an artistic activity inspired by the theme of sustainability, in which they created an abstract map of Europe highlighting the 27 EU Member States.
On 7 May, the Delegation held a basketball tournament with five teams from local secondary schools, involving 60 students aged 14-17. Each team symbolically represented the EU or one of the four EU Member States with a diplomatic presence in Eritrea. The event fostered team spirit, friendly competition, and intercultural understanding through sport.
The week concluded on 9 May with a reception held at the Head of Delegation’s residence in celebration of Europe Day. The event brought together members of the diplomatic corps, government officials and local stakeholders and was attended by more than 150 people. In his remarks, EU Ambassador Gianluca Grippa emphasised the EU’s ongoing commitment to global efforts, stating, 'The EU will continue to be at the forefront of efforts to fully support peace, security, prosperity, and universal values.'
