The EU launches a new Twinning project to assist Georgia in strengthening the links between business and science. The 2-year project “Supporting inter-sectoral collaboration possibilities between Research and Industry”, with a budget of € 1 300 000, aims to address the priorities and challenges in Georgia’s Science, Technology and  Innovation (STI) system by ensuring interdisciplinary approach, collaborative research and promoting evidence-based policy implementation in line with the EU-Georgia Association Agreement. The project will bring Austrian, German and Latvian experts together with the Georgian colleagues to enhance the capacity of the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia (SRNSFG) and to improve its legal framework.  Over 50 representatives of the EU, Government, State and Private Universities and civil society took part in an online meeting launching the new Twinning project. The kick-off meeting was organized on the same day when activities under the project “Science is the Captain”, awarded in the framework of the EU Horizon 2020, took place during the “European Researcher’s Night”. For the first time Georgia joined the EU Member States in this Europe-wide public event that brings researchers closer to the public, with the goal to showcase the diversity of  science and its impact on citizens’ daily lives.
“The European Union is a longstanding and reliable partner and supporter of Georgia in science and research. This project will address key challenges in areas of science, technology and innovation, through reinforcement of the collaboration between research and industry. Enhancing this particular dimension is vital for sustainable economic development and growth in Georgia", Noted Catalin Gherman, Deputy Head of Cooperation, EU Delegation to Georgia.

Deputy Minister of Education Science Culture and Sports of Georgia, Nunu Mitskevich underlined the significance of the Twinning project for the development of Georgian science. She expressed hope that cooperation will be fruitful and science business links will be strengthened with the support of this Twinning Project.  The Twinning project is implemented by Environment Agency Austria (Umweltbundesamt GmbH) in partnership with Joanneum Research, Austria, Austrian Science Fund, Austrian Research Promotion Agency, DLR Project Management Agency, Germany and Daugavpils University, Latvia. In the course of the next two years, the project will enhance the capacity of the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia (SRNSFG) by revising and improving its existing programs and operational activities in response to national priorities and socio-economic challenges, considering regional and international context. The project will also address the absence of the science-business collaboration, promote intersectoral multidisciplinary research opportunities and support advancement of the STI system in Georgia.  For more information, please contact:
