The EU Delegation to Iceland joins the Global #OrangeTheWorld Campaign

The EU Delegation to Iceland joins the global #OrangeTheWorld campaign to raise awareness of gender-based violence.

On 25 November, we marked the International Day to end Violence against Women. On this day every year, UN Women kicks off its yearly global campaign to raise awareness of gender-based violence. This year, the #16 Days of Activism run under the theme of “UNiTE! Invest to prevent violence against women & girls,” leading up to Human Rights Day and the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

We support this campaign.

One in three women worldwide faces violence from a partner or sexual violence in her lifetime, regardless of background, culture, ethnic origin, age, or religion. The EU invests in prevention and protection, which are fundamental pillars in the fight against gender-based violence that together form a powerful framework for creating a safer, more equitable world for all. The EU also invest in accountability and whistleblowing mechanisms, help lines, shelters and services across the EU and beyond. This sends the unwavering message that all forms of violence against women, girls and boys are unacceptable and will be met with accountability measures, upholding a commitment to safeguard the rights and dignity of all people in every context.

Breaking the silence surrounding violence against women is an urgent imperative. Addressing gender-based violence starts with talking about it to break the taboo and break the stigma. Gender-based violence is not a private issue, not a women’s issue, but an issue for the whole society. The EU invests to create an environment where women and children are not only encouraged but also empowered to break this silence. The EU's commitment to addressing these obstacles, promoting gender equality, and strengthening support systems underscores the determination to ensure that every victim’s-survivor's voice is heard and respected.

Addressing violence against women and girls requires a comprehensive as well as transformative approach that tackles the root causes at the societal, cultural, and individual levels – an approach takes into account intersecting vulnerabilities, including women and girls with disabilities, persons belonging to minorities, migrant women and girls, and LGBTIQ+ persons.

As violence against women is rooted in inequalities, we have to tackle the root causes. Social norms, stereotypes and sexism cause harm by perpetuating inequality. Every individual is entitled to the full enjoyment of human rights, without any form of discrimination. The EU leads by dismantling stereotypes and promoting non-violence, recognizing that they hinder women's progress and contribute to gender-based violence.
