Icelandic Maritime Innovation Receives € 9.2m from the EU
The large maritime solar and wind "WHISPER" project has received € 9.2m from the Horizon Europe research and innovation fund. The EU funded project will run for four years from 2023 to 2027. The innovative project brings together 13 Icelandic and EU partners with the aim of advancing green energy transition through the development of a wind and solar technology that can be used to decarbonise the shipping industry.
The main Icelandic technology in the WHISPER project is "Sidewind", a start-up company that has patented a containerised wind turbine that can be lowered onto and lifted off ships and used to generate electricity for the ship.
EU Ambassador, Lucie Samcová-Hall Allen, met with representatives from the Icelandic partners in the WHISPER project, Verkís, SideWind, Athygli and Samskip. The Ambassador received a presentation of the project and of the SideWind turbines.
