Protecting Iraqi Human Rights Defenders: Securing a Movement for Human Rights

This action will focus on targeting a group of human rights defenders (HRDs) and making their work more visible in their field, whilst further building their capacity in very specific areas of interest. It is expected that this group of HRDs will take further actions and steps to monitor, document and report on human rights abuses, and produce effective and verified human rights reports, based on field based research facts. In addition, support to HRDs will result in better advocacy and negotiations with the government on policies and legislation related to human rights.

Expected outcomes:

1. Improved capacity for the young generation of Iraqi human rights defenders to report according to international standards.
2. Enhanced information and advocacy on human rights violations in Iraq.
3. Improved protection for human rights defenders and civil activists, through protection mechanisms.
4. Visible improvement of Iraqi laws and legislation, in terms of dedicated protection for Iraqi human rights defenders.
