Are you an EU citizen in Japan? Learn more about your right to consular protection and how you can benefit from it in Japan.

As an EU citizen, you can take simple steps to make consular protection more effective, for example:

  • Following the travel advice issued by your country’s Foreign Ministry.

  • When abroad, registering with your Embassy or Consulate and/or through dedicated platforms, if applicable.

Other tips include keeping an electronic copy of your travel documents, subscribing to travel insurance or saving crisis contact details.

However, situations can arise in which you need consular protection.  Consular protection is the help an EU Member State can provide to its citizens in case they need assistance abroad. Typically, consular protection can include cases such as:

  • A need for emergency travel documents;

  • A serious accident or serious illness;

  • Relief and repatriation in case of an emergency;

  • Being a victim of crime;

  • Arrest or detention;

  • Death of a family member or other companion.

In Japan, all 27 EU Member States have a resident Embassy .

Are you an EU citizen in need of consular protection in Japan?

  • You can contact your resident Embassy/Consulate/Honorary Consul in order to receive consular protection.

Please note that the EU Delegation in Japan cannot provide direct consular assistance.

You can find contact details of the resident EU Member States Embassies/Consulates/Honorary Consuls who can provide consular protection [as well as existing arrangements between EU Member States for consular protection] in Japan in the list below.

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is the EU’s new, state-of-the-art border management system that will transform how external borders are managed.

Designed to modernize and digitalize border controls, the EES will replace the manual stamping of passports with automated electronic records, providing a faster and more efficient travel experience.

The system will be introduced on 12 October 2025, with full implementation across all external borders by 10 April 2026. Once fully operational, the EES will eliminate passport stamping and store entry and exit data electronically.
