The European Union (EU) is an economic and political partnership between 27 European countries. It plays an important role in international affairs through diplomacy, trade, development aid and working with global organisations. Abroad, the EU is represented through more than 140 diplomatic representations, known also as EU Delegations, who have a similar function to those of an embassy.
The EU Delegation to Japan was established in 1974 with the objective of fostering closer ties between the European Union and Japan.
We offer
We offer a post of Driver. Under this post, the recruited person will be attributed functions depending on the needs of the Delegation, serving in the Administration Section under the supervision and responsibility of the Head of Administration. Upon recruitment, the successful candidate will occupy a specific job function as Driver to serve as support staff to drive the vehicles of the Delegation and carry out some other ancillary tasks. In particular, the tasks will include, among others:
- Drive the staff of the Delegation including the Ambassador to Japan;
- Drive official visitors and other high-level office holders visiting Japan from Headquarters;
- Transport goods and / or documents for the Delegation;
- Cleaning and small maintenance of the official vehicles, and e-bikes;
- Assistance with event organisation or minor repairs;
- Assist the Administration section with various tasks (distribute mail and documents, provide manpower for various tasks, etc.)
The job will be carried out in the EU Delegation premises in Tokyo with a working time of 37,5 hours / week. This job position corresponds to a local agent (Group 5) position with a starting basic monthly salary of
JPY 327,475 to maximum 541,675 depending the years of relevant experience. There is a competitive benefits package, including bonuses, housing and transportation allowances, paid leave days and public holidays, full benefit of Japanese social insurance and the additional pension scheme.
The contract will be limited to three years. An opportunity to obtain an indefinite period contract will be assessed based on the need of the Delegation.
Selection Criteria
Minimum Requirements:
- Medically fit to perform the required duties
- Enjoy civil rights and permits for employment under local law
- Japanese driving licence type Futsuu (ordinary)
- Knowledge of both English (B1 level) and Japanese language (C2 level)
- Secondary education (high school)
- At least 3 years' proven experience as a driver
Knowledge and expertise in the following areas would be considered an asset:
- University degree
- Type II (nishu) driving licence
- Work experience in an international organisation or company and in a multi-cultural environment
- Very good knowledge of the city of Tokyo
Other Skills:
Required:
- Capacity to adapt quickly to changing circumstances and needs
- Courteous, service oriented, team player, discreet, available for extra hours after work or weekends
- Comfortable in attending VIP's
Appreciated:
- Capacity as handyman for small repairs or to facilitate large events in the Delegation
- Attended special driving training (defensive driving, driving in snow, etc.)
- General understanding of the European Union and the role of the Delegation
- Living within an hour from the workplace

The procedure
- After the deadline for applications, the applications will be reviewed by a Selection Committee set up for this purpose. The Selection Committee will prepare a short-list of candidates who are considered to be the most suitable for the post on the basis of a preliminary assessment of the information provided in their application letter and the supporting documents. The short-listed candidates will be invited to a selection process in which the knowledge of the applicant in the relevant field will be tested.
- The candidates who have not been short-listed will not be contacted individually; However, the Delegation will use the same means of publication as for this Vacancy Notice to inform the remaining candidates once the recruitment procedure has been completed and that a candidate has (or has not) been recruited.
