EDU-SYRIA Scholarship Programme Celebrates 10 Years of Impact

The EDU-SYRIA Scholarship Programme, funded by the European Union and managed by the German Jordanian University (GJU), celebrated its 10-year anniversary on 10 December 2025, highlighting a successful model of supporting and accompanying Syrian refugees and vulnerable Jordanians in their journey through education

The event, themed “Ten Years of Changing Futures - عشر سنوات من تغيير المستقبل,” drew over 150 Syrian and Jordanian students and high-level representatives, including H.E. Mr. Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas, the European Union Ambassador to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Prof. Ala’aldeen Al-Halhouli, the President of the German Jordanian University (GJU),  Dr. Abdul Hamid Al-Khaled, Deputy Minister of Higher Education in Syria and Dr. Mohammad Ghaith, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Education for Vocational and Technical Education Affairs.

During the ceremony, H.E. Ambassador Chatzisavas stressed that “over the next years, Syria needs a wide variety of technical skills to rebuild its industrial capacity. Therefore, EDU-SYRIA’s next phase will invest heavily on TVET and scaling up skills to meet this demand and make sure that Jordan plays a key role in Syria’s post war economy. Prof. Al-Halhouli. In his message, he reflected on the university’s role in leading the programme. He also highlighted the programme’s impact on strengthening access to education and reaffirmed GJU’s commitment to supporting youth and expanding opportunities, especially in innovation and entrepreneurship. along with Prof. Dhiah Al Deen Abou Tair, showcasing the programme's achievements, including over 4,500 scholarships awarded.

EDU-SYRIA students and graduates were at the centre of the event. They shared firsthand experiences of their successful journeys despite the challenging job market context and contributed to shaping new priorities to overcome these obstacles. Stronger focus on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), as well as improving recognition of certificates and mobility were some of them. The ceremony concluded with the book exhibition “EDU-SYRIA: My Story,” a book that collects personal stories written by programme beneficiaries, that showcases the ambitious character these students and the transformative power of education. The first printed copies were presented on stage to mark the occasion. A series of short videos were also showcased during the event, highlighting the programme’s milestones, student achievements, and the impact of EDU-SYRIA over the past ten years.
