EU Film Festival Jordan Breaks Audience Records in 38th Edition

Amman, Jordan — [1 October] — The 38th edition of the EU Film Festival in Jordan concluded this evening, after three weeks of uninterrupted screenings in Amman and in the Governorates, debates, workshops and social events.

The festival welcomed more than 10,000 people at the Royal Film Commission – Jordan amphitheatre only. The festival also expanded its reach across Jordan, with screenings in Wadi Rum, Wadi Musa, Zarqa, Salt, Aqaba, Ajloun, Jerash and Irbid, attracting a further 1,000 guests.

This year's programme featured 22 films from across Europe, showcasing a diversity of languages, cultures, perspectives and cinematic traditions. Beyond the Member States of the European Union, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Ukraine were also invited to present productions in the framework of the EU Film Festival.

The festival also celebrated Jordanian cinema and the closing-night was dedicated to the screening of Sink, directed by Zain Duraie, who was present for the occasion. The film has been selected as Jordan's official submission for the International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards.

The Festival also highlighted the important role of cultural exchange and direct engagement between filmmakers and audiences. Directors from Cyprus and Austria travelled to Jordan to participate in Q&A sessions and workshops, engaging with audiences as well as Jordanian filmmakers and film professionals.

Speaking at the closing, H.E. Pierre-Christophe CHATZISAVAS, Ambassador of the European Union highlighted the growing popularity of the festival, noting that its continued expansion mirrors the deep bound of friendship between Europeans and Jordanians and reflects a strong interest in cinema as a means of cultural exchange, dialogue and understanding.

The European Union expressed its appreciation to the Royal Film Commission - Jordan for its continued partnership and support, and to Her Royal Highness Princess Rym Ali for her trust and continued patronage. 

Mohannad Al-Bakri, Managing Director of the Royal Film Commission – Jordan, noted: “The RFC is proud to be a longstanding partner of the EU Film Festival and to contribute to creating a platform where European and Jordanian cinema can meet. We are particularly pleased that this year’s festival also celebrated Jordanian filmmaking through the closing-night screening of Sink, highlighting the strength and diversity of our local cinema. We look forward to continuing this collaboration and expanding opportunities for audiences and filmmakers across Jordan in the years ahead.”

The organisers look forward to welcoming audiences again next year for the next edition of the EU Film Festival in Jordan.
