Organization of ceremony to launch ERASMUS+ project in the field of medical education in Jordan

The Hashemite University and partners have been awarded a grant of 800,000 EURO under the ERASMUS+ program for 2023, to fund the implementation of the 'Capacity Building Educational Program for Preceptors: Supporting medical students’ clinical experiences.'

The project’s launch ceremony was held on Wednesday at the Mövenpick Hotel in Amman, under the patronage of H.E. the Minister of Education and Higher Education and Scientific Research, Azmi Mahafza. It was also attended by the Ambassador of the European Union to Jordan, H.E. Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas, the Presidents of participating Jordanian universities, the Director of the Erasmus+ Office in Jordan, deans of medical colleges in Jordanian and European universities, and project teams from the participating eight universities.

The three-year project aims at supporting medical education in Jordan by enhancing the capabilities of clinical trainers (doctors) who train medical students in educational hospitals across Jordan. This will be achieved through the design and implementation of a professional training program to enhance their teaching, supervision, and training skills.

The project is led by the Hashemite University in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, medical colleges at the University of Jordan, Jordan University of Science and Technology, Yarmouk University, Mutah University, Al-Balqa Applied University, the University of Minho from Portugal, and the University of Patras from Greece.

H.E. EU Ambassador to Jordan, Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas, said: “Building a robust healthcare system and nurturing education are the key pillars of the EU’s long-lasting partnership with Jordan. Through this project, we aim to support Jordan to achieve its goal of becoming a thriving hub for medical tourism in the region, while addressing the critical healthcare needs of both Jordanians and refugees. By training medical instructors, we are empowering the healthcare workforce and helping to create a sustainable future for Jordan."

Education remains a cornerstone of the EU’s partnership with Jordan, with the contribution of 130 million EURO to the budget of the Ministry of Education under the EU’s bilateral response.

H.E. also highlighted the recent results of Erasmus+ in Jordan, with 58 approved projects on higher education, 34 projects for youth, 10 in vocational education and training, 95 winners of the Erasmus Mundus scholarships and 7.625 staff and student mobility to program and associated countries.
