In partnership with Public Security Directorate, the EU launches “Supporting Systems for GBV Prevention and Protection” Project in Jordan
With an allocated budget of 4 million Euros, the project is financed under the EU Regional Trust Fund “MADAD”, established in response to the Syrian Crisis, and is being implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). The project’s main beneficiaries are Jordan’s Family Protection and Juvenile Department (FPJD) along with the supporting departments within the Public Security Directorate (PSD).
The launching event was held under the patronage of H.E. EU Ambassador to Jordan Maria Hadjitheodosiou, FPJD and PSD officials, as well as representatives from the Ministries of Social Development, Justice, Health, Education, and Planning & International Cooperation. Attendees will also include the National Council for Family Affairs, AECID, GIZ Country Director Elisabeth Girrbach, in addition to relevant NGOs including the Jordanian National Commission for Women, Jordan River Foundation, UNHCR, UNFPA, UNICEF, UN Women, Save the Children, and EuroMed Feminist Initiatives.
“The European Union takes GBV very seriously. Respect and protection of everyone’s rights is enshrined in our treaties as a founding value of our Union. We are working for the elimination of gender based violence both within the EU and outside, in partnership with governments and organisations worldwide,” stressed H.E. EU Ambassador to Jordan Maria Hadjitheodosiou. “The program we are launching today will focus on educating GBV survivors on the availability of services designed to protect them against all forms of gender-based violence... I want to believe that our joint efforts will support Jordan’s to achieve the declared objective of Jordan’s National Strategy for Women 2020-2025 that is: to ensure a society free of "all forms of gender-based violence and discrimination."
This 42 months project has an overall objective of strengthening the prevention and protection systems on gender-based violence (GBV) in Jordan. The project activities will focus on cross-cutting issues that need a multi-agency approach and cooperation, and will address the specific capacity building needs of the FPJD and the supporting departments of PSD, as the primary beneficiary. The project will also cover the development and implementation of GBV awareness raising and communication activities.
About the Project
The EU-funded “Supporting Systems for GBV Prevention and Protection” project is a 42-month initiative implemented by GIZ under the “MADAD” Fund with a budget of 4 million Euros. The overall objective is to strengthen the prevention and protection systems on gender-based violence (GBV) in Jordan. The project aims at enhancing the FPJD and PSD capacity to enhance the support processes of GBV victims by shifting from an institution-centred to a victim-centred approach. The project will focus on building the Public Security Directorate’s capacity; and that of the Family Protection and Juvenile Department; improving mechanisms for strengthening GBV prevention and protection, in addition to developing and promoting related awareness raising campaigns.
