Background information:

The World Cleanup Day is one of the largest global movements that unites millions of volunteers, governments and organizations. More than 14,9 million people for 190 countries participated in the World Cleanup Day on 17 September 2022. On this day volunteers worldwide come together to rid our planet of garbage – cleaning up litter and mismanaged waste from our beaches, rivers, forests, and streets. This world-changing idea began in Estonia, in 2008.

#EUBeachCleanup is an international campaign that encourages people over the world to clean coastal areas and beaches from garbage and waste. The campaign contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals, namely to sustainable consumption and production patterns (SDG 12), to conservation and sustainably use of the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development (SDG 14), and to protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss (SDG 15).

#EUBeachCleanup is a more focussed global campaign organised by the EU and the UN to raise awareness about plastic pollution all over the world. In 2022, 416 physical clean-ups took place in 41 countries, on all inhabited continents, over 14,000 people participated removing several tens of tonnes of litter. The event took place in Kazakhstan as well last year.
