EU-funded Green Transition Project Holds First Steering Committee Meeting in Astana

The first Steering Committee meeting of the European Union-funded project “EU Support to Green Transition in Kazakhstan” (GTK) was successfully held today marking the start of the project’s implementation phase. The meeting brought together the representatives from the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Water and Irrigation of Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Trade and Integration of Kazakhstan, and the EU Delegation to Kazakhstan.

The GTK project supports implementation of Kazakhstan’s 2021 Environmental Code and the new Water Code in line with EU good practices. It focuses on carbon-market governance, EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) preparedness, industrial environmental performance, and digitalised water management. 

The meeting served as an important platform to agree on the project’s workplan and key deliverables. Participants also discussed the project’s schedule and implementation modalities and confirmed the key focal points within the lead beneficiary agencies.

Addressing the participants, Mr Hans Farnhammer, Head of Partnerships at the EU Delegation to Kazakhstan, reaffirmed the EU's commitment to supporting Kazakhstan’s transition towards a greener and more sustainable economy and noted: “Green transition is a strategic shared priority for the European Union and Kazakhstan and our cooperation is about turning this shared ambition into practical results. Through the Global Gateway strategy, the EU is supporting Kazakhstan in strengthening environmental governance, improving resource efficiency and creating the conditions for sustainable, low-carbon growth. The GTK project is an important contribution to this effort. By facilitating the implementation of Kazakhstan’s 2021 Environmental Code and new Water Code and drawing on European expertise and best practices, the project will help translate environmental reforms into practical solutions and contribute to a greener, more competitive and resilient future for Kazakhstan.”

The Project Steering Committee meets annually to set and endorse the GTK project's strategic priorities, monitor its main achievements and key challenges during the implementation as well as evaluate its progress.
