Essay: European Union & Kazakhstan: Partnership for My Future

This year marks 33 years of diplomatic relations between Kazakhstan and the European Union. For many, this is just a number, but for me, it represents the environment in which my generation is growing, a space full of opportunities shaped by international cooperation. As a student of International Relations, I see the European Union and Kazakhstan partnership not only as a diplomatic framework, but as a platform where I can contribute, learn, and create a positive impact for my country and its people.
Since Kazakhstan gained independence in 1991, our country has steadily built strong ties with the European Union. The Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement, in force since 2020, provides a structured framework for collaboration in areas such as education, sustainable development, governance, trade, and regional security. While these are important milestones, what inspires me most is the potential for young people to actively participate in shaping this partnership, turning agreements into tangible benefits for society.
My interest in international affairs grew when I participated in student conferences, volunteer projects, and cultural exchanges that connected me with peers from different countries. One moment that particularly shaped my perspective was working on an online education project for children from rural areas. It showed me that collaboration between institutions, NGOs, and volunteers can have a real impact on people’s lives. Experiences like this made me understand that diplomacy and international partnerships are not abstract ideas, they are tools to strengthen communities, improve opportunities, and empower individuals.
The first EU-Central Asia Summit in Samarkand in 2025 demonstrated that our region is becoming an important partner for Europe. Witnessing this milestone reinforced my sense
of purpose: I want to actively contribute to initiatives that strengthen cooperation, support reforms, and bring meaningful benefits to citizens. I am planning to develop projects that connect European and Kazakh institutions, particularly in areas like sustainable development, education, and regional dialogue.
As a young woman, I am especially inspired by the European Union’s commitment to inclusive development and equal opportunities. I believe that women in Kazakhstan can and should take leadership roles in international projects, diplomacy, and social initiatives. My goal is to use my skills, knowledge, and passion to encourage others, create opportunities, and expand participation in international cooperation, showing the benefits of partnership not only to governments, but also to communities and young people.
Looking forward, I imagine a career where I am actively building bridges between Kazakhstan and the European Union. I want to contribute to policy-making, support sustainable projects, and implement initiatives that are focused on dialogue, collaboration, and innovation. I aim to strengthen the partnership while making a direct positive impact on people’s lives, creating a culture of engagement and shared responsibility.
The European Union and Kazakhstan partnership is more than diplomatic milestones or historical achievements. It is a foundation for growth, opportunity, and meaningful action. For me, it represents both inspiration and a professional path , a partnership that I am determined to actively contribute to, shaping my own future and empowering others along the way.
