Lake Victoria Basin Integrated Water Resources Management programme launched
On Friday, 14th February 2020, the transboundary Lake Victoria Basin Integrated Water Resources Programme was launched in Kisumu.
Walter Tretton, First Counsellor of the European Union's Delegation to Kenya, participated in the event alongside other project partners, notably Germany and the German development bank KfW as well as the Lake Victoria Basin Commission, a body of the East African Community, who will be the Programme Executing Entity.
The programme's budget will be above EUR 40mn to which the European Union will contribute about one quarter.
Walter Tretton stated," I am particularly pleased that this project will work at several levels: on the much needed policy and regulatory side but also by implementing concrete priority investment projects such as the one that will improve sanitation in Manyatta, Kisumu.These projects will have a tangible beneficial impact on the environment of this lake. We are happy to share the European Union's expertise on transboundary water managemeny with the countries of the East African Community and the 40 million people living in the lake's catchment area."
