Kosovo receives more than EUR 100 million in EU and German funding for wastewater treatment and waste management
Both projects, which show the strong solidarity of the EU and its Member States with Kosovo, will contribute to the protection of the environment and enhance Kosovo’s compliance with the EU’s environmental standards as one of the EU accession requirements. The goal is to solve the acute waste problems in Kosovo municipalities and help create safer and better living conditions.
The wastewater treatment project implemented in Prishtinë/Priština region will include the construction of new main sewer lines from Prishtinë/Priština to Fushë Kosovë/Kosovo Polje and Obiliq/Obilić, and in the direction of Gračanica/Graçanicë and Southwest, as well as the rehabilitation of the regional sewer networks and house connections, and of the stormwater separation system.
This project will complement the construction of a Wastewater Treatment Plant, to be financed by France, making this joint EU, German and French endeavour the biggest-ever investment in this sector in Kosovo. Germany will provide 48.8 and the EU 20 million Euros, towards the wastewater project, while Prishtinë/Priština and Fushë Kosovë/Kosovo Polje municipalities will co-fund the project with 9 and 2 million Euros respectively.
The solid waste management project will be implemented in Prishtinë/Priština, Prizren, Gjilan/ Gnjilane, Ferizaj/Uroševac, Podujevë/Podujevo and Pejë/Peć municipalities and will include the construction, expansion and rehabilitation of landfills and transfer stations for solid waste.
For this project, Germany will provide 20 and the EU a total of up to 24 million Euros, while the Kosovo Government will contribute EUR 8 million and Pejë/Peć Municipality another EUR 3 million.
The EU and its Member States remain the largest provider of financial assistance to Kosovo.
