Three Years On: The EU in Kosovo Stands in Solidarity with Ukraine

On 24 February 2025, the EU in Kosovo observed the grim third anniversary of Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified full-scale invasion of Ukraine, reaffirming its unwavering support for Ukraine and its people. The Ukrainian flag flew proudly at the headquarters of the EU in Kosovo, a symbol of solidarity that continues to stand tall in the face of adversity.

To mark this important day, the EU organized an event together with the Association of Journalists of Kosovo on 22 February, which brought together Ukrainian journalists currently residing in Kosovo through the Journalists in Residence program, Kosovo journalists who reported during the Kosovo war, and officials from the EU in Kosovo and the Dutch Embassy.

At the heart of the discussion was the human toll the war continues to take on Ukraine, and the crucial role that journalists play in times of conflict. The conversation emphasised how journalists expose war crimes, give a voice to the victims, and fight against disinformation. These reporters are also working tirelessly to preserve evidence that will help seek justice and provide a historical record of these harrowing times. As the war rages on, journalists remain dedicated to their mission of truth, often at great personal risk.

On 24 February, the EU in Kosovo, together with the Embassies of France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom, organised a ceremony at the National Library in Pristina to mark this grim anniversary. Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani stressed the power of humanity in times of war, while the French Ambassador underscored the importance of joining forces to safeguard European security.

As part of the event, which brought together representatives of the government, political parties, civil society, and media, attendees also watched a special screening of the documentary “Intercepted”, a stark portrayal of how war dehumanises those on the battlefield.

Staff of the EU in Kosovo also joined a peaceful demonstration organised by the Ukrainian-Kosovo Association “Bridges of Friendship” in Pristina to show solidarity with Ukraine.

As the war continues in Ukraine, the EU remains resolute in its unwavering support for Ukraine. The EU and its Member States are Ukraine’s leading donor – providing over EUR 135 billion, including EUR 48,7 billion of military assistance – more than any other country. The EU will remain on this path and stand by Ukraine as long as Ukraine needs.
