A Delegation of four members of the Foreign Affairs Committee visited Malawi on 18 and 19 December 2023.

During the timely visit, they had fruitful discussions with the State President Dr Lazarus Chakwera, the Speaker of Parliament, Chairpersons of parliamentary committees, several Ministers and representatives of civil society organisations.

Speaking to the press, chairperson of the committee and leader of Delegation David McAllister confirmed that the purpose of the visit to Malawi was to recognise the shared values, the long-standing partnership between EU and Malawi, and to discuss how the two sides can continue deepening their political and multilateral cooperation. “In times of direct attacks on and the decline of democracy worldwide, working together with partners in Africa that share similar values is paramount,” he said.

The MEPS expressed appreciation of Malawi’s ambitious political and economic reform agenda, noting the steps taken by Malawi to strengthen its economy among increasing external pressures, including the newly secured IMF Extended Credit Facility. They also underlined the EU’s support for Malawi’s fight against corruption.
