Are you a young graduate interested in international relations? Are you curious to learn more about work of a diplomatic mission and how the EU Delegation represents EU interests and values in Malaysia?

We offer:

A traineeship of up to 6 months in 2026 within the Political, Press and Information and the Trade and Economic Section of the EU Delegation to Malaysia, with a primary focus on political analysis and trade and economic matters. The tentative start date is May 2026.

The Political, Press and Information Section (PPI) is responsible for political analysis and reporting, relations with Malaysian interlocutors, coordination with EU Member States and organisation of public events.

The Trade and Economic Section (TRADE) deals with bilateral trade and economic relations between the EU and Malaysia.

Main tasks: 

  • Assist with the analysis of the political situation in Malaysia;
  • Monitor domestic and foreign policy developments, including ASEAN relations, rule of law, governance and human rights;
  • Draft background notes and briefings on political and economic developments;
  • Support outreach to relevant local stakeholders;
  • Analyse and report on bilateral trade and investment developments;
  • Monitor Malaysia’s trade policy in relation to third countries, including ASEAN, and its impact on the EU;
  • Analyse macro or sector-specific Malaysian economic policies and developments;
  • Participate in and report on seminars, workshops and conferences;
  • Contribute to statistical data collation and analysis of trade and economic indicators;
  • Attend and report from meetings, academic lectures and think-tank events.

We look for:

Qualifications or special requirements:

  • Taking into account the local health and security conditions, applicants currently residing in Malaysia will only be considered.
  • At least a Bachelor’s degree in international relations, political science, economics, law or a related field;
  • Excellent spoken and written English; knowledge of Malay is an advantage;
  • Strong analytical and drafting skills;
  • Good IT skills;
  • Knowledge of trade and economic policies and the international trading system is an asset;
  • Ability to work in a multicultural and multilingual environment.
  • Candidates must have less than one year of professional experience after graduation by the signing date of the traineeship agreement (other traineeships or student jobs or volunteering works carried out during university or after graduation are not considered as professional experience)

Important information to read before applying

Before applying you are requested to examine the dedicated website as well as the general eligibility criteria for a paid traineeship (Article 8 of the Decision ADMIN(2017)28 – Paid traineeship).

Each selected trainee will receive a monthly grant to cover living expenses. All costs related to travels, visa, insurance, accommodation must be borne by the trainee. 

Applications from non-eligible candidates will not be considered. After the evaluation of all applications, shortlisted candidates will be contacted and invited for an interview. Unsuccessful candidates will be notified by email. In case the selected candidates are not able to present the required documents, their application will be rejected.

The traineeships can only be offered in compliance with the local legislation as well as the legislation of the country of origin. 

Citizens from EU Member states:

  • must provide proof that they will be covered against the risk of a pandemic and the costs of repatriation;
  • must hold a relevant entrance visa and / or temporary residence permit where applicable,  based on the traineeship agreement, the duration of the traineeship, and in compliance with the local legislation.
