Joint message by EU Ambassador Mazeiks and U.S. Ambassador Logsdon
Today, we are commemorating one of the most horrific events in the history of the city of Chisinau. 120 years ago, on 19–21 April 1903, an anti-Jewish pogrom took place at a time when there were large-scale pogroms throughout the Russian Empire.
False news, distributed by some local media at the time, claimed that two children had been murdered by the Jewish community. Instigated by this lies and an environment of antisemitism, ordinary people became murderers.
Today, we reaffirm our commitment and resolution in our fight against antisemitism and to stand up to those who spread falsehood, hatred and lies.
