Day of State Prosecutors of Montenegro: Independent Prosecution Safeguarding Justice and Public Confidence
To mark the Day of State Prosecutors of Montenegro, a ceremony was held to honour the institution that stands as a cornerstone of the rule of law, the protection of legality, and equality before the law for all citizens.
Supreme State Prosecutor Milorad Marković emphasised during the opening of the ceremony that this day is an opportunity to jointly reaffirm the values that must serve as the foundation of the judicial system: independence, professionalism, and accountability.
“We have demonstrated our readiness to act decisively and professionally, to make progress and achieve results. Our goal is clear – a prosecution service that is efficient, transparent, and trusted by citizens,” stated the Supreme State Prosecutor.
The Ambassador of the European Union to Montenegro, Johann Sattler, underlined the importance of independence and autonomy of the prosecution service as essential pillars of the rule of law.
“The European Union will always stand behind an independent and results-oriented prosecution service – one that is free to intensify its efforts in combating organised crime and corruption, and to strengthen its own accountability,” he said.
Antonio Vercher Noguera, President of the Consultative Council of European Prosecutors, also addressed the attendees, reminding them that Montenegro’s Prosecution Service acts in accordance with the opinion of the Consultative Council of European Prosecutors (CCPE) of the Council of Europe, which states that prosecutorial independence is not a privilege but a guarantee of fair, impartial, and effective justice.
“The greatest challenge in Europe today is safeguarding the independence of the judiciary, which is crucial for the role of prosecutors within the system. Prosecutors must be free from all unlawful influences, whether internal or external – from any institution, parliament, police, or other bodies,” stated Noguera.
During the ceremony, the new official website of the State Prosecution Service of Montenegro was presented. The website is designed to enhance transparency and public access to information. It marks another step towards a more open, modern, and efficient operation of the prosecutorial organisation. The website is now available at: www.tuzilastvo.me.
Ceremony marking the Day of State Prosecutors of Montenegro was held at the “Hilton” Hotel in Podgorica. It was attended by representatives of judicial institutions, the diplomatic corps, and international organisations.
