EU provides €6 million military support to Montenegro

EU High Representative/Vice President Kaja Kallas today presented a EUR 6 million military assistance package to Montenegro under the European Peace Facility, reaffirming the EU’s commitment to strengthening the country’s defence and security sector. During her visit to the Military Airport in Podgorica, she met with Minister of Defence Dragan Krapovic and attended a demonstration of the Montenegrin military’s search and rescue equipment.
The EU-funded military equipment will enhance Montenegro’s operational readiness, improve its ability to respond to hazardous threats, and strengthen search and rescue capabilities, while also supporting its participation in EU security and defence missions. The package, adopted by the EU Council on 28 February 2025, includes equipment for extreme cold weather, chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear defence operations, and helicopter-borne search and rescue equipment, along with related supplies, services, and training.

High Representative/Vice President Kallas reaffirmed the EU’s strong support for Montenegro’s path to membership. “This assistance is more than a token of solidarity – it is a strategic boost to Montenegro’s security and resilience. As Montenegro makes great strides towards the EU, we are deepening our shared commitment to peace and stability in the region,” she said.
Minister of Defence Krapovic underlined that this donation will enhance Montenegro’s national defence and military capacities in the areas of CBRN capabilities, search and rescue, and equipment for extreme weather conditions, which will also be beneficial in the context of the guidance the Montenegrin Army receives through NATO Capability Targets.
The assistance complements the EU’s broader security and resilience efforts in the Western Balkans, including a regional initiative to support the development of military medical capabilities also involving Montenegro.
